Found in northern Italy, Pieve d’Alpago is a charming village that has the perfect blend of natural beauty and Italian atmosphere. Located in the Province of Belluno, within the Veneto region, Pieve d’Alpago is on the edge of the Alpago Valley. The Dolomites and Lago di Santa Croce surround this stunning area.

The best activities in Pieve d'Alpago

Pieve d’Alpago is the ideal vacation spot for outdoor enthusiasts, as the Dolomites, Lago di Santa Croce, and the Alpago Valley converge to offer a wide range of activities in every season.

Hiking & Mountain Trails

The region has so many scenic hikes to choose from. The Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 7 and routes around Monte Dolada and Cansiglio are some of the most notable. One of our favourite trails is from Rifugio Dolada to Busa Toronda. It’s about 17.5 km with a 1,650 m elevation gain. This route is better suited for experienced hikers; however, if you are looking for an easier route, the “Mysteries of Fadalto” near Farra d’Alpago is only 4 km and can be completed in 1½ hrs. It’s perfect for nature lovers and families.

Mountain Biking & Gravel

The Alpago Tour circling Lago di Santa Croce spans around 52 km with a 1,560 m elevation. It has stunning panoramic views from the Dolomites ridges as you loop around the lake and village. There are plenty of quiet trails that lead to historic WWI forts near Soccher. These trails are between 30 and 34 km and 1,110 m climbing, with moderate difficulty.

Paragliding & Hang Gliding

Mount Dolada is the place to go for air sports. The take-off near Rifugio Dolada sits around 1,500 m, with launches for tandem paragliding with a climb of 900 m. We recommended booking excursions ahead of time to lock in your flight, as there are limited daily trips available.

Water Sports at Lago di Santa Croce

Covering around 7.2 km² and with a depth of 33 m, the Santa Croce Lake is thermally wind-fed from spring to autumn. Afternoon winds are perfect for sailing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foiling, and more. There are multiple schools and rental centres available at Poiatte and Farra for lessons and equipment rental for windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, and even wakeboarding and wing-foiling.

Other Outdoor Sports

In Pieve d’Alpago, golf lovers can also enjoy a day outdoors at the Pian del Cansiglio. This is an 18-hole, high-altitude course. Alternatively, sport fishing is also very popular at Lago di Santa Croce, and, of course, in the winter, you can enjoy ski mountaineering and snowshoeing.

Weather in Pieve d'Alpago

The climate in Pieve d’Alpago is characterised by its mountain location. It has distinct seasons and a pleasant climate year-round.

When spring arrives, mild temperatures range from 10°C to 18°C. This creates the perfect conditions for outdoor sports and activities. As the snow melts in the higher elevations, the green landscape flourishes, making it an excellent time for hiking.

Moving into summer, the weather becomes warm but rarely too hot, with average daytime temperatures between 20°C and 27°C. Thanks to the fresh mountain air, this season is ideal for outdoor activities, like cycling, paragliding, and water sports. In particular, the lake’s afternoon winds are perfect for windsurfers and sailors.

As autumn approaches, temperatures cool down to between 10°C and 20°C. During this time, the leaves in the Alpago Valley turn into a colourful sight. Moreover, local food festivals and harvest events are taking place within the town and are great for learning about the local culture and heritage.

When winter finally arrives, temperatures drop to between -2°C and 8°C, and snowfall is common. Although Pieve d’Alpago itself is not a major ski destination, it’s a great base for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and exploring nearby ski areas in the Dolomiti Bellunesi.
