The easy path to Croda da Lago

If you’re looking for an accessible route, the easiest way to get to La Croda da Lago is from Ponte de Ru Curto. There is a small car park along the SP638 road between Cortina d’Ampezzo and Passo Giau where you can leave your vehicle. From here, follow Trail 437, which is a well-marked path. This trail goes through forested areas, and as the trees clear, it reveals views of the surrounding Dolomites.

After walking for about 45 minutes, you’ll reach a clearing at Cason de Formin where the forest opens up and the first mountain views appear. At this point, turn right onto Trail 434, a route that takes you directly to the iconic Lago Federa. This impressive lake is located approximately 2,038 m above sea level.

This part of the trail is relatively easy. It has a total elevation gain of about 400–500 meters and a hiking time of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours one way. Along the way, you will come across wooden footbridges to cross streams, and there are a few benches to relax on. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the Rifugio Croda da Lago-Gianni Palmieri, where we recommend you take a break and have a picnic lunch.

Since this route is relatively easy and there is a refuge for facilities, it’s perfect for families and casual hikers who want to experience the Dolomites without an intense climb.

Croda da Lago Normal Route

If you are looking for a more immersive hiking experience, the Croda da Lago normal route is the perfect option. It offers a full-day circular trek around the lake and mountain ridges. This clockwise circuit begins and ends at Ponte de Ru Curto. It covers approximately 12.5 to 13.5 km, with an elevation gain and loss of 800 to 900 meters. On average, the hike takes between 5 and 6 hours, depending on pace and weather conditions.

The trail begins by ascending through forested slopes on Trail 437. Eventually you will reach Lago Federa and the Rifugio Croda da Lago–Gianni Palmieri. From the rifugio, the path climbs toward Forcella Ambrizzola (2,277 m). It’s a wide saddle that has amazing panoramic views of the Lago Federa basin, the Tofane range, and Cortina d’Ampezzo below. Continuing on, the trail becomes more rugged as it ascends to Forcella de Formin (2,460 m), the highest point of the circuit.

After the saddle, the descent becomes much steeper and more technical. You will need to go through a boulder field, where sure-footedness and sturdy hiking boots are a must! Trekking poles are highly recommended for balance and support, especially for loose gravel sections.

Summer is usually the best time for taking this route. Typically between June and mid-October, the trail is clear of snow and the rifugio is open.
