{"id":2781,"date":"2026-07-03T09:46:47","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T09:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/?p=2781"},"modified":"2026-06-17T13:30:56","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T13:30:56","slug":"lago-misurina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/en\/lago-misurina\/","title":{"rendered":"Lago di Misurina: The Dolomites Lake You&#8217;ll Plan Your Whole Trip Around"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lago di Misurina<\/strong> is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the entire Dolomites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this guide, we&#8217;ll look at how to get there, what to hike, what to do in summer and winter, the best viewpoints for the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and when to time your visit to avoid the worst of the crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All about Lago di Misurina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lago di Misurina<\/strong> sits at 1,754 metres above sea level in the <strong>Province of Belluno<\/strong>, Veneto, making it the highest and largest natural lake in the Cadore region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four major mountain groups frame the lake on all sides. <strong>Sorapiss<\/strong> is to the south, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/en\/monte-cristallo\/\">Monte Cristallo<\/a> dominates the west, the <strong>Cadini di Misurina<\/strong> group fills the eastern horizon, and the <strong>Tre Cime di Lavaredo<\/strong> sits to the north. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lake is part of the <strong>UNESCO Dolomites World Heritage Site<\/strong>, and the surrounding area falls within the Drei Zinnen \/ Tre Cime Nature Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to Lake Misurina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The easiest way is by car via the SS51 di Alemagna. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/en\/auronzo-di-cadore\/\">Auronzo di Cadore<\/a>, the road climbs through a series of hairpin bends in the forest before opening out to the lake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From <strong>Cortina d&#8217;Ampezzo<\/strong> the drive takes around 25\u201330 minutes. Several paid car parks are located around the lakeshore. In summer, they fill fast; arriving before 9 am is a reliable way to get a spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a bus service during the summer months from both <strong>Cortina d&#8217;Ampezzo<\/strong> and <strong>Dobbiaco<\/strong>. It&#8217;s suitable for families, accessible with a pushchair on most sections, and you&#8217;ll have continuous views of all four mountain groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the trails worth trekking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lake Misurina ring trail<\/strong> \u2014 2.7 km, flat, 45 minutes, suitable for all abilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lago d&#8217;Antorno loop<\/strong> \u2014 7 km round trip, moderate, leads to a smaller lake with excellent Tre Cime views, roughly 2.5 hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cadini di Misurina via Route 120A<\/strong> \u2014 7.4 km, moderate-difficult, 2.5 hours, reaches the famous &#8220;Flying Banana&#8221; viewpoint used in Avengers: Infinity War filming locations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monte Piana (2,324 m)<\/strong> \u2014 approximately 2 hours each way from the lake; a plateau with preserved WWI trenches, tunnels, and an open-air museum \u2014 genuinely worth the effort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Torre del Diavolo loop<\/strong> \u2014 10.7 km, difficult, significant elevation gain, for experienced hikers only<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lago-di-Misurina-1024x768.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2807\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lago-di-Misurina-1024x768.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lago-di-Misurina-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lago-di-Misurina-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lago-di-Misurina.webp 1360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Winter and summer activities at Lago di Misurina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lake works in two very different modes depending on the season, and both are genuinely worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Summer (June to September)<\/strong> is when the lake is at its most accessible. Kayaking and paddle boating are available directly on the water. Fishing is permitted with a licence. Caf\u00e9s and restaurants are open around the lake, and the Tre Cime toll road operates from approximately June to October. Cycling is popular throughout the area; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/en\/cycling-dolomites\/\">cycling routes across the Dolomites<\/a> pass through some spectacular terrain around Misurina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Winter (December to March)<\/strong> brings a completely different atmosphere. When temperatures stay below zero for extended periods, <strong>Lago di Misurina<\/strong> freezes over, and speed skating is a popular activity. Nearby <strong>Lago d&#8217;Antorno <\/strong>also freezes and has a managed skating rink with skate hire, open daily from 9 am to 8 pm, with torchlight skating in the evenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Lake-Misurina-route-1024x768.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Lake-Misurina-route-1024x768.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Lake-Misurina-route-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Lake-Misurina-route-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.d4u.house\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Lake-Misurina-route.webp 1360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Viewing the Tre Cime di Lavaredo from the lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Tre Cime di Lavaredo<\/strong> are arguably the most photographed peaks in the entire Dolomites, and <strong>Lago di Misurina<\/strong> is where most people get their first proper look at them. One of the most reproduced images in alpine photography for good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to go closer, the Tre Cime toll road starts just above the lake and climbs approximately 7 km to <em>Rifugio Auronzo<\/em> at 2,320 metres. This is the trailhead for the classic Tre Cime circuit, a loop of about 9.5 km that takes 3 to 4 hours and passes through <em>Rifugio Lavaredo<\/em> and <em>Rifugio Locatelli<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;d rather earn the views on foot, the trail via<strong> Monte Campedelle<\/strong> (the full loop from <strong>Lago di Misurina<\/strong> to Rifugio Tre Cime) covers 15.4 miles with 4,586 ft of elevation gain and takes 9.5 to 10.5 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best time of year to visit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our opinion, every season is unique. What matters is what your expectations are for your holiday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>June<\/strong>: alpine flowers in bloom, Tre Cime road opens, fewer crowds than July and August. Some higher trails may still have snow patches. Good compromise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>July and August<\/strong>: peak season. Warmest temperatures, everything open, maximum crowds. Car parks fill before 9 am. If you&#8217;re visiting in this window, arrive early or take the bus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>September<\/strong>: arguably the best month. Crowds thin, temperatures remain pleasant, the larch trees start turning gold, and the light is excellent for photography. The Tre Cime road stays open until October.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>October<\/strong>: autumn colours are at their peak. Noticeably quieter. Some facilities start reducing hours. Tre Cime road closes, typically by the end of October.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>December to March<\/strong>: winter conditions, frozen lake possible, cross-country skiing and ice skating at Lago d&#8217;Antorno. A very different experience from summer.
